Congress MP Shashi Tharoor's comments on dynastic politics have sparked an uproar. While the Congress party is on the defensive, the BJP has found a ready-made issue and an opportunity to target Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party. In an article, Shashi Tharoor criticized India's dynastic politics. The article was titled "Indian Politics Are a Family Business." Tharoor accused the Nehru-Gandhi family of dynastic politics, drawing reactions from Congress leaders.

Congress leaders furious at Tharoor's allegations

Congress MP Pramod Tiwari, responding to Shashi Tharoor's allegations against the Gandhi family, said, "Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the most capable Prime Minister of this country. Indira Gandhi proved herself by sacrificing her life. Rajiv Gandhi also sacrificed his life to serve the country. In such a situation, if someone talks about the Gandhi family's dynasty, then which other family in the country has shown such sacrifice, dedication, and capability? Is it the BJP?"

Congress leader Rashid Alvi said that a person cannot be prevented from entering politics because of their family history. He said, "In a democracy, the people decide. You can't prevent someone from entering politics just because their father was an MP. This is happening in every field. How can you avoid it?"

Congress leader Udit Raj defended the Gandhi family's dynastic politics, saying that a doctor's son becomes a doctor, and a businessman's son becomes a businessman. Politics is no exception. If a politician has a criminal history, it reflects the reality of our society. Election tickets are distributed based on caste and family. Udit Raj also accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of promoting dynastic politics.

BJP takes a dig at Tharoor, supports Tharoor

The ruling party at the Centre, the BJP, has taken a dig at the Congress over Tharoor's statement. BJP spokesperson Shahzad Jaihind wrote in a post shared on social media that Shashi Tharoor has directly attacked India's "nepo kid" Rahul Gandhi and "younger nepo kid" Tejashwi Yadav. Shahzad wrote, "Dr. Tharoor has become a daredevil. He has directly attacked the 'nepo kid' or 'dynastic nawab." When I spoke out against "nepo nameless" Rahul Gandhi in 2017, you know what happened to me. Sir, I pray for you. The First Family always takes revenge."

What did Tharoor write in the article that caused an uproar?

In his article, Shashi Tharoor wrote, "The Nehru-Gandhi family is India's most influential political family, and its legacy is linked to the freedom movement. But this has led some to believe that politics is the birthright of certain families." He wrote, "Dynastic politics is a major threat to Indian democracy. When political power is determined by family ties rather than competence, dedication, or grassroots connections, the quality of governance suffers." selecting from a small talent pool is never beneficial, but it becomes even more difficult when the candidate's main qualification is their surname. In reality, members of political dynasties are often isolated from the challenges of ordinary people, often failing to effectively respond to the needs of their voters. Yet, there is no guarantee that they will be held accountable for poor performance.' Tharoor also mentioned the Abdullah and Mufti families, Naveen Patnaik, the Thackeray brothers in Maharashtra, the Paswans in Bihar, Tejashwi Yadav and the Badal family in Punjab, and the Karunanidhi family in Tamil Nadu in his article.
