The central government on Friday opposed a petition in the Delhi High Court seeking a reduction in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on air purifiers from 18 percent to 5 percent.
Before a bench of Justices Amit Mahajan and Vinod Kumar, the central government stated that the matter was under high-level consideration, but more time was needed to provide a considered response.

Additional Solicitor General (ASG) N. Venkataraman, representing the central government, argued that ignoring the GST Council's framework in this matter would create a difficult situation and could lead to demands for GST exemptions without following the proper procedure.
The bench inquired about the court's concerns regarding the situation in Delhi and the surrounding areas. The court noted that an air purifier currently costs between ₹10,000 and ₹15,000. The bench questioned why the GST could not be brought down to a reasonable level so that even a common man could afford an air purifier.
