The West Bengal government on Tuesday filed an appeal in the Calcutta High Court requesting the death penalty for Sanjay Roy, convicted of raping and killing a female doctor at RG Kar Hospital. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had announced to challenge in the High Court the sentence of imprisonment till death by the Sealdah court. The state government has taken this step in less than 24 hours of the Chief Minister's announcement.
Advocate General Kishore Dutta filed a petition before a division bench of Justice Debangsu Basak and Justice Mohammad Shabbar Rashidi on Tuesday morning to challenge the order passed by Sealdah Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das. An official said, the government has approached the High Court and has obtained the court's permission to file an appeal. High Court sources said that if the process of filing the appeal is completed by Tuesday, the judicial process related to the case can start this week.
Mamata said - If he escaped after committing the crime, he would do it again.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee termed the incident as a rare, heinous, and sensitive crime and said that if someone escapes after committing a crime, he will do it again and it is not our job to protect him. She said that she is demanding the death penalty for the culprit.
