Many questions are being raised after India's Test cricket team's crushing defeat against South Africa. South Africa defeated India by 408 runs in Guwahati to complete a 2-0 series sweep. This defeat exposed the Indian batsmen's weakness against spin. Speaking on this issue, former Indian spin legend Ravichandran Ashwin said that India has now become one of the worst spin-playing teams in the world.
"India among the weakest teams against spin."
In his YouTube channel "Ash Ki Baat," Ashwin said, "In today's era, we are probably the weakest spin-playing batting unit in the world. This didn't happen suddenly; there's a reason behind it." South African off-spinner Simon Harmer took 17 wickets in two matches, while Keshav Maharaj took six. Previously, in 2024, New Zealand's Ajaz Patel and Mitchell Santner also troubled the Indian batsmen.
"Neutral curators and changing pitch philosophy"
Ashwin explained that the pitches in Indian domestic cricket played a major role in this decline. He said, "Our first-class cricket is now controlled by neutral curators everywhere. The purpose was to prevent poor pitches, but the effect was that we lost the ability to play spin." He said that this change has helped the Indian team learn to play pace and seam better in foreign conditions, but has weakened spin batting.
"Sweep isn't necessary to play spin; defense is important."
Ashwin explained that Indian batsmen have forgotten basic technique. He said, "Playing spin doesn't mean playing sweep or reverse sweep from the start. Build a strong defense first, then select your shots." He added, "Test cricket is tiring, requires patience. At least New Zealand scored runs and tried to put pressure on us. South Africa didn't do that."
"South Africa played real Test cricket."
Ashwin praised South Africa's style of play, saying, "They played classic attritional Test cricket. 80 runs per session, accurate bowling, tight field sets, and long spells for the spinners. This kind of cricket is what wins in India." The victory in Guwahati gave South Africa its first Test series win in India in 25 years. The defeat was India's biggest Test defeat by a margin.
How will India improve?
Ashwin's statement has raised serious questions about the Indian cricket system. Will India need to return to spin-friendly domestic cricket, improve technical skills, and prioritize the longer format? The answer to this question will determine whether India will regain its lost identity in Test cricket.
