Many workers are leaving the city, fearing a lockdown. There has been an increase in the number of workers leaving for the last two days. Some say they want to leave the city before train services stop.

 

Last year's that may not even be seen at the stations, but a large number of laborers have now left their homes. Let us tell you that in 2020, thousands of migrant laborers gathered at the stations trying to catch trains for Bihar, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh.

 

According to a report published in the Indian Express, officials at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), Kurla, from where trains go to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, said the number of passengers had increased in the last two days.

 

On Sunday, when Uddhav Thackeray announced the new restrictions, many workers had already made bookings to go to his house and some had reached the station after hearing the restrictions.

 

Concrete driver Sonu Patel coming from Mahape reached LTT amid new restrictions. Patel and his other colleagues went to UP on foot after a nationwide lockdown last year. He says, "Last year, I reached my home in Jaunpur on foot. This time, I do not want to be caught in a similar situation. The owner of the vehicle told us that no further work would be done as new restrictions were imposed by the government. Now I don't have work before they stop the trains again, I'd better go. "

 

A guard of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) deployed at LTT for crowd management said that they had been seeing an increase in the number of passengers for the last two days. However, the crowds are far less than the nationwide lockdown last year.

 

Sohanlal, another migrant laborer in the Gonda district of UP, said that he has neither any money nor any work. Sohan Lal and his two friends reached LTT to take the Kushinagar Express (LTT Gorakhpur) to reach their hometown.

 

Central and Western Railway officials said they have seen neither booking nor unusual congestion at stations for boarding long-distance trains on Sunday night.

 

“Since the pandemic started, we also introduced a booking system for second class coaches to reduce congestion. People have to book tickets in advance to board the train.

 

Passengers can enter the platform only if they have a valid ticket. Akhilesh Rao, who works in Ambujwadi for NGO Ghar Bachao Ghar Bano, said that he is receiving panic calls from migrant laborers who inquire if they should return home. He says that "the government has not yet announced a complete lockdown, but these restrictions will drive many people out of jobs."
