He further said that the rest of the city has been "liberated". The capture of the port city of Mariupol is both strategically and symbolic for Russia.

 

Russian military tightened a siege on Wednesday against guards hiding in a massive steel plant in Mariupol, Ukraine's possibly last stronghold in Mariupol. "We probably have a few days or a few hours left," said a fighter hiding inside, pleading for help in the video. Russian bombing attempts to rescue civilians trapped in the port city have failed. Meanwhile, the Kremlin said in a draft of its demands for an end to the war that the number of people fleeing the country had reached five million.

 

80 percent occupied

 

The Kremlin said it aimed to capture the Donbas. The predominantly Russian-speaking eastern region is home to coal mines, metallurgical plants, and heavy equipment factories. The Kyiv government-controlled 60 percent of the Luhansk region before Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. Governor Serhi Hedai said the Russian army was moving towards the cities of Rubizhne and Popasna after the capture of Kreminna. He has requested all the residents here to leave the city immediately. Russia says it has handed over a draft of its demands to Ukraine to end the conflict. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, "The ball is in their court, we are waiting for an answer."

 

Attempt to build a safe corridor failed

 

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had not seen or heard any of the proposals. However, one of his top advisers said Ukraine was reviewing it. Ukraine said Russia had heavily bombed the ruined city of Mariupol. A few thousand Ukrainian soldiers are present at the Ajvostall steel plant. A Ukrainian in a video message on Facebook urged world leaders to evacuate more people from the plant. "We have more than 500 wounded soldiers and hundreds of civilians, including women and children," she said. Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk said efforts to build a safe corridor for women, children, and the elderly had failed. Because the Russians did not enforce a ceasefire.

 

Successful test of ballistic missile 'Sarmat'

 

As global tensions escalated, Russia informed us about the first successful test of a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile 'Sarmat'. President Vladimir Putin said it can evade any missile defense system and makes those threatening Russia "think twice". Russia's state space agency called the test a "gift to NATO". The Pentagon called it a "routine" test and said it did not consider it a threat.
