A Sikh student was detained in the US for wearing a kirpan. This case of misconduct by the US police is from the University of North Carolina. A Sikh student was detained from the university campus for allegedly wearing a kirpan, one of the integral parts of the five Sikh Kakars. The video of this incident is going viral on social media. In the video, a US police officer can be seen trying to take a kirpan from a Sikh youth. The video of the incident was initially shared by the student. After which it became viral on social media.

According to media reports, when the police officer was trying to take the kirpan from the Sikh student, he told the officer that it was a sign of his religion, but he could not take it off. However, the officer did not listen to the student and tried to take out the kirpan. However, during this entire incident, the student kept asking the officer not to touch his kirpan. However, on this, the police officer said that if he does not remove the kirpan, he will have to be handcuffed. On seeing this, the officer handcuffed the student.

Sharing the video of the incident, the student wrote, "I didn't want to post this but I don't think I will get any support from @unccharlotte (University of North Carolina). I was told someone called 911 and I was handcuffed when I protested because I refused to let the officer take my kirpan out of the sheath."

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Harjinder Singh Dhami condemned the incident and took it up with the Indian Ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh. He also urged External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to ensure the religious freedom of Sikhs in the US. Also sharing the video on Twitter, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa wrote, "Despite several global campaigns to create awareness about Sikh Kakar, a Sikh youth was arrested by the campus police at the University of North Carolina. Detention for Saber is disappointing. I condemn the discriminatory attitude of the university authorities towards Sikh students."
