Former MP Sanjay Nirupam on Thursday took a dig at the Congress leadership over his expulsion from the party. He claimed that the party did this after sending his resignation on his behalf. Earlier, following complaints of indiscipline and anti-party statements, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge late on Wednesday evening had decided to expel Nirupam from the party for six years with immediate effect.
After this, on Thursday morning, former Mumbai Congress chief Nirupam said on X, 'It seems that immediately after receiving my resignation letter last night, they decided to issue my expulsion. It was nice to see such promptness. Just sharing this information that I will be giving a detailed statement today between 11.30 am to 12 noon. Earlier in a letter to Kharge, Nirupam had said that I have finally decided to fulfill your long-awaited wish. I announce that I am resigning from the primary membership of the All India Congress Committee.
It is being told that Sanjay Nirupam was hoping for a ticket from the Mumbai North West Lok Sabha constituency. However, Shiv Sena (UBT) has announced its candidate for this seat for the upcoming parliamentary elections. Nirupam then started criticizing the Maharashtra Congress leadership for giving Mumbai seats to the Uddhav Thackeray-led party during the seat-sharing talks of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance. On this, on Wednesday Congress removed Nirupam's name from the list of star campaigners.
After this, Nirupam launched a scathing attack saying that the party is facing a serious financial crisis, hence it should use stationery and energy to save itself. The former MP from Mumbai North had also said that the Congress leadership should not allow itself to be weakened by Shiv Sena (UBT).
What did Nirupam say on the issue of seat sharing?
Nirupam, a former MP from Mumbai North, made the statement after Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) announced its candidates for four of the six Lok Sabha seats in Mumbai. Nirupam had said that the Congress leadership should not allow itself to bow before Shiv Sena (UBT). Sanjay Nirupam had expressed strong objection to Shiv Sena's list, saying, 'They want to contest five seats in Mumbai and will leave it for Congress as a donation. This decision is to eliminate Congress in Mumbai. I condemn this decision.
Nirupam said Thackeray did not follow coalition dharma by announcing candidates unilaterally. The Congress leader also opposed the nomination of Amol Kirtikar as the candidate from Mumbai North West seat. Amol is an accused in the Khichdi contract scam and is being investigated by the ED for this.
