After the defeat in the final of the World Test Championship 2021-23, there is a lot of talk about the captain of the Indian team, Rohit Sharma. There are calls for Rohit Sharma to be removed from Test captaincy. However, Indian coach Rahul Dravid has made it clear that Rohit Sharma will continue to be the captain of the Indian Test team for the time being. Rohit Sharma's record as Indian captain is excellent. He is the most successful Indian captain in terms of win percentage.
Questions about Rohit Sharma's captaincy are also being raised because of his fitness. Many fans believe that Rohit Sharma is not fit to play all three formats. Rohit, 36, will have to decide for himself whether he will be able to play all three formats till the next Test Championship final. If he wants to play in all three formats, he will have to be consistent with the bat as well. If Rohit Sharma decides to give up the captaincy of the Test team, then the selection of the new captain of India will not be easy.
Pujara, Kohli, and Rahane's ages became a problem
Most of the players in Team India are in the age group of 30 to 35 years. Virat Kohli is the former captain of India and he is no longer an option to captain again. Cheteshwar Pujara does not have captaincy experience and due to his poor form, he may be out of Team India as well. In such a situation, Ajinkya Rahane can be made the new captain of India. Even 35-year-old Rahane cannot captain India for long. In such a situation, young players can be groomed under his captaincy.
Pant and Iyer can get the responsibility
The Indian team management currently has two options. If Rohit Sharma is ready for the responsibility of captaincy, then prepare players like Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, and Shubman Gill as future captains and give the captaincy to the best option after the next test championship final. Apart from Bumrah, Pant, and Iyer have shown that they can lead, but all three players are currently battling injuries. Bumrah's injury is such that it will be difficult for him to play Test cricket for a long time. At the same time, nothing is clear about when Pant will return to the field. Iyer is returning from injury soon but his place in the Test team is not confirmed after Rahane's return. In such a situation, the Indian team must invest in Shubman Gill.
Shubman Gill is also an option
If Rahane does not take this responsibility when Rohit leaves the captaincy, then Ashwin can also be made the captain of the Test team and he can prepare the future captain of the country. Shubman Gill is young and if he gets the captaincy in the future, he can handle this responsibility for a long time. At the same time, after making players like Lokesh Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah captains, the country will have to see a new captain again after the next two-three years.
