The state's opposition ruling party is attacking the BJP over the textbook controversy in Karnataka. However, amidst the ongoing controversy, the state CM Basavaraj Bommai has issued a statement. CM Bommai said that many questions about the constitution of the new committee for textbook review do not arise. We have said earlier also that our government is the government of Basav Path. The CM further said that we will discuss with the saints who have written to me about the phrases related to Basavanna.
The earlier committee had also given the same opinion.
CM Bommai further said that when Congress was in power in 2015, both the committee of Bargur Ramachandra and the committee formed by us gave almost the same opinion. There is a difference only regarding gender initiation. The saints on whose behalf the letters have been written will be consulted and everything will be reviewed. On Tuesday, CM Bommai also stated the textbook controversy, saying that further action on its review will be taken based on the report of the Education Minister.
What is the dispute?
A section of saints in the state has alleged that the government's revised Kannada and social science textbooks for Class X students have distorted the teachings of the renowned social reformer Basavanna. The saints have also written a letter to CM Bommai regarding this. Apart from this, the saints have also accused the poet Kuvempu of insulting the state anthem. The opposition in the state is also accusing the government of saffronizing education.
Late-night CM Bommai took decisions
CM Basavaraj Bommai held a meeting with State Primary Education Minister BC Nagesh late on Friday night. After this, the government dissolved the textbook revision panel headed by Rohit Chakratirth. The CM ordered that the objectionable points regarding the social reformer Basavanna in the revised textbook should be reviewed. At the same time, the government has ordered the cyber cell to identify the person who circulated it on social media by tampering with the state anthem (Nadgithe) written by Adesh Jnanpith award winner Kuvempu.
Former CM targeted the government
Former Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy targeted the BJP government and said that it is not known why the Karnataka government is unnecessarily raising many controversial issues. I am disappointed with the way this government is running. There are many other common problems in the state but they (the government) leave them and take up such issues.
