On one hand, in the Hathras gang-rape case, there has been outrage across the country, people are demanding justice for the victim, now people are also mobilizing in support of the accused based on casteism. There was a panchayat of the Thakur community in which it was decided to campaign for the release of the accused. In this panchayat, Thakurs and upper caste people of Boolgadhi and a dozen nearby villages participated. He said that under the guise of this incident, the upper castes are being targeted and the anger of the Dalits against the upper caste society is being instigated.
He said that when the medical report has not confirmed the gang rape, then on what basis the accused have been targeted. Demanding a CBI inquiry into the incident, both sides have demanded a narco test. It was also decided that no outsiders would be allowed to enter the victim's village. Just yesterday, a former MLA from Thakur society had said that his family members are involved in the murder of the girl. Such news is adding to the anxiety of the family members of the victim.
Talking to Bhaskar, a Thakur youth from Boolgadhi village said that the atmosphere has changed since the panchayat and now people are uniting against the Dalit family. There are a few Dalits in this village. After the Thakurs and Brahmins come together, the situation will become even more difficult for them. While talking, the young man was very scared that the people of the society in the village might not know that he has talked to the media.
He told that the people of the village are now with the police and want the media not to come to the village anymore. The Thakur society feels that the media has only shown the favor of the aggrieved family and ignored the family of the accused.
When I asked him if people were going to take care of his house or comfort him, he said that the people of the village are very scared so they are not going. Even if someone wants to go, they are not able to go because of the police. The police are the police outside the victim's house.
As a precaution, the administration has deployed a huge police force in the village of Bulgaria. Police are stationed in the village. There are about ten policemen outside each house. Forces called from several districts have been deployed here.
The victim's family does not know what is going on outside
The victim's brother told us that I do not know what is going on outside. The family is under house arrest, with no contact with anyone outside. He said that our sister has left and now we are being harassed on the contrary.
The victim's family is no longer confident of a police investigation. His brother repeats like every time that the family needs justice, nothing except justice. Whenever I spoke to the family of the victim, every time they said that they want nothing less than hanging for the accused involved in this incident.
Late Friday evening, the Uttar Pradesh government suspended a total of five policemen, including SP Vikrant Veer of Hathras. When I wanted to know the family's reaction to this, the victim's brother said that the government has done the right thing. This will send a message to the negligent officials that the government can take strict measures.
The family of the gang-rape accused said - do not even like to sit and speak with them, will our children touch their daughter?
Even in Delhi, when I was talking to the family of the victim at Safdarjung Hospital, his brother and father were repeatedly referring to caste. Then the question was coming into my mind that is there still so much casteism in our world? On reaching the village, the answer to this question was also found. When we met the family members of the arrested accused, we used to say, "We do not even like to sit and speak with them, our children will touch their daughter?"
