When the court commissioner's team reached Sambhal at 7 am on Sunday for a survey based on the suit filed claiming Jama Masjid of Sambhal as Harihar temple, there was a ruckus in Sambhal. On hearing the news of the team's arrival, the crowd gathered and tried to enter the mosque. When stopped, they pelted stones at the police. The violent crowd vandalized several vehicles including the car of Chandausi's CO and set them on fire. Meanwhile, firing also started. The police dispersed the crowd by firing tear gas shells and lathi charges. Five people died in the riot. Dozens of people including several officials have been injured. Given the tension, Sambhal's internet service has been shut down. Sambhal's District Officer Rajendra Pansiya has notified and banned any outsider, social organization, or public representative from entering Sambhal without the officials' orders.
The survey team was driven out by firing tear gas shells and lathis.
The survey team had come under the leadership of Ramesh Singh Raghav, a senior advocate of Court Commissioner Chandausi. Sambhal DM Dr. Rajendra Pansia and SP Krishna Kumar Vishnoi were also with the team. Seeing the situation going out of control outside, the police fired tear gas shells and lathis and somehow took the survey team out safely. As soon as the police became aggressive, the rioters started running away, but after some time the crowd gathered again and started pelting stones. During this, firing started from the roofs. The police and PAC of other districts reached the spot and along with the officers took on the rioting mob. Despite this, the situation remained out of control for about one and a half hours. Somehow the police dispersed the crowd and moved forward. The entire area was cordoned off.
There is undeclared curfew-like atmosphere in the entire Sambhal
Meanwhile, tension deepened in the entire city. By evening, the strictness had increased so much that an undeclared curfew-like atmosphere prevailed in the city. The family members of the youths who were victims of violence have said that they died due to police firing. On the other hand, Commissioner Anjaneya Kumar Singh, who reached the spot, said that two of the three youths died due to bullet injuries, but the police did not fire. The police used tear gas shells and lathis to disperse the crowd. The reason for the death of the third youth is not clear. The injured include DIG, Sambhal DM, SP and SDM.
