Uber rape case: Court to hear final arguments Feb 16

New Delhi, Feb 11 (IANS) A court here Wednesday fixed Feb 16 for final arguments in the rape case against an Uber cab driver.

Additional Sessions Judge Kaveri Baweja fixed Feb 16 for hearing the final arguments after closing the defence evidence proceedings.

The court also asked accused driver Shiv Kumar Yadav whether he wants to examine himself as a defence witnesses in the case or not.

Last week, Yadav was allowed to examine himself as a defence witness. Later, he changed his counsel, who has now sought more time from the court for going through the case file.

The court fixed the date for final arguments after the accused driver refused to examine himself as a defence witness.

The court also dismissed his application seeking adjournment of the case moved by his new counsel.

His counsel told the court that he needs time as he has to visit the spot, where the alleged offence took place, Mathura and other places before leading further in the case.

According to police, a woman executive was allegedly raped by 32-year-old Yadav inside his cab on the night of Dec 5, 2014.

The court Jan 13 framed against Yadav charges of rape and causing grievous bodily harm and endangering the life of a woman, kidnapping a woman, criminal intimidation and voluntarily causing hurt under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.

In just 17 days, the prosecution last week completed recording of evidence in a court here.
