The cloud of uncertainty hovering over the appointment of Pakistan's new army chief started to clear on Wednesday. It has been announced by the government that after the retirement of General Qamar Javed Bajwa, a list of candidates has been received for this post. There are many names of senior generals in it. 61-year-old Bajwa is retiring on 29 November. His tenure was given an extension of 3 years.
The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) issued a detailed statement on Twitter. In this, it was told that the summary has been received from the Ministry of Defense for the appointment of a new Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and CJCSC (Chairman Joint Chief of Staff Committee).
Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif recently visited London. There he consulted his brother and former Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif on the same matter. Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had suggested to President Alvi on Saturday that there should not be any chaos in the appointment of the Army Chief.
According to the statement, 'The Prime Minister will decide on the appointment of this post.' The Army has confirmed that it has forwarded the names of 6 top lieutenant generals for an appointment. However, these names were not mentioned in the statement. But it is being told that in 6 names Lt General Asim Munir (currently Quarter Master General), Lt General Sahir Shamshad Mirza (Commander 10 Corps), Lt General Azhar Abbas (Chief of General Staff), Lt General Mahmood (National Defense University President), Lt Gen Faiz Hamid (Commander Bahawalpur Corps), and Lt Gen Mohd Amir (Commander Gujranwala Corps). Before November 29, PM Shahbaz Sharif will elect two of these for COAS and CJCSC. A summary will be sent by Prime Minister Sharif to President Arif Alvi, who will notify the appointments.
