The UK government has announced that it will add India to the list of safe states. After this, the process of return of people traveling illegally from India will speed up. Also, all asylum claims of Indian citizens coming illegally through other routes will be considered inadmissible. There will be no appeal and they will be sent back.
India and Georgia will be included
The UK Home Office said in a statement that the government will add India and Georgia to the list of safe states. It said the decision would be another step in the implementation of the 'Illegal Migration Act 2023' and the plan to stop the boats. "The draft legislation introduced in Parliament today (Wednesday 8 November) will strengthen the immigration system and help prevent abuse, including by people making unfounded security claims," the UK Home Office said in the statement.
Citizens with illegal entry will not be able to seek asylum in UK
According to a UK Home Office statement, there has been an increase in Indian and Georgian small-boat movements in the past year, despite people not being at risk of persecution. It added, "Recognizing these countries as safe would mean that if someone arrived illegally from one of these, we would not accept their claim into the UK asylum system."
Many countries already included
Other countries deemed safe by the UK include Albania and Switzerland, states in the European Union and the European Economic Area, the UK Home Office said. Britain's Home Secretary Suella Braverman said they must stop people from making dangerous and illegal trips to Britain from fundamentally safe countries.
Message for illegal immigrants
In the statement, Braverman said, "We must stop people from fundamentally safe countries making dangerous and illegal journeys to the UK. Expanding this list will allow us to more quickly remove people who have no right to stay here." There are no rights and it sends a clear message that if you come here illegally, you cannot live here."
Countries are included under several parameters
According to the UK Home Office, if the UK Home Secretary is satisfied that there is no risk of persecution of its nationals from a country and that the removal of nationals from that country would not go against the UK's obligations under the Human Rights Convention, then Any country can be included in the list of safe states.
The UK Home Office has stated that under section 80AA, the designation of nations is subject to a draft positive procedure. This means that the measure will be scrutinized in the normal way, through debate in both houses of Parliament, before it comes into force.
