Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the country's first underwater metro in Kolkata today. After reaching West Bengal, PM Modi will dedicate this state-of-the-art metro rail service to the countrymen in a function. Kolkata's underwater metro has been constructed under the Hooghly River. A few days ago, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav reviewed the Kolkata Metro Rail services. The Prime Minister will dedicate the underwater metro rail, which is completely ready for the passengers, to the country on Wednesday.
Maharashtra will also get the gift of development projects
Apart from the underwater metro, the Prime Minister will also inaugurate the Kavi Subhash-Hemant Mukhopadhyay metro section and the Taratala-Majerhat metro section. Along with this, PM Modi will also inaugurate many major metro and rapid transit projects across the country. Apart from this, the Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for the extension of Pune Metro Rail Project Phase 1 between Pimpri Chinchwad Metro-Nigdi.
The first phase of Kolkata's East-West Metro
It is noteworthy that in February 2020, the then Railway Minister Piyush Goyal inaugurated the first phase of the East-West Metro Corridor of Kolkata Metro connecting Salt Lake Sector V and Salt Lake Stadium. The 16.5 km long metro line connects Howrah on the west bank of the Hooghly to Salt Lake City on the east bank. 10.8 km portion is underground. This is India's first such transport project, in which the metro rail will pass through a tunnel built under the river.
