In Brazil, thousands of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro broke through police barricades and entered Parliament, the Supreme Court, and the Presidential Palace on Sunday. They also vandalized. The police have arrested 400 people who created a ruckus.
Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi has also expressed concern about this incident. He wrote in a Twitter post – I am deeply concerned about the news of riots and sabotage against government institutions by protesters in Brasilia. Democracy should be respected by all. We offer our full support to the Brazilian authorities.
The attack happened suddenly, the police pulled out the miscreants
The police have thrown out the miscreants who had entered the government buildings. The government said that it was like a sudden attack. Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who became president last week, called it a fascist attack.
The way violence took place in the major government buildings of Brazil, similar violence took place 2 years ago on January 6, 2021, in America as well. Then the supporters of President Donald Trump, who had lost the election, entered Capitol Hill i.e. the US Parliament. He committed violence. The committee probing the incident held Trump solely responsible for the violence.
Supporters said - the protest will not stop now, and the government said - democracy will not be destroyed
Brazilian Justice Minister Flavio Dino said, "There are still people on the Internet who are saying that such terrorist incidents will not stop. But we will not let them do that. They will not be able to destroy the democracy of Brazil. The struggle will not be allowed to turn into crime. Criminals will be treated like criminals.
Violence a week after the oath of the new President
Presidential elections were held in Brazil in October. In these elections, Bolsonaro was defeated by about 21 lakh 39 thousand votes and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva won. Last week on January 1, Silva was sworn in. Only after this did Bolsonaro supporters attack government buildings. Bolsonaro's supporters have refused to accept Silva as president. Protesters have since been camping in large numbers in the capital, Brasilia. Due to this, not even a single session has been conducted in the Parliament so far.
Silva, and Bolsonaro condemned the violence
Silva called the violence in Brasilia uncivilized by holding a press conference. He said – There was a lapse in security, and only then the supporters of Bolsonaro were able to enter the Parliament. Such people make politics ugly. All those involved in the violence will be punished.
Bolsonaro also condemned his supporters on Twitter. He wrote – In a democracy, protests should always be held peacefully and within the purview of the law. The attacks on government buildings today and the attacks that took place in 2013 and 2017 are illegal.
There was violence a month ago as well
Similar violence took place in Brazil about a month ago. There was a clash between the police and supporters of Bolsonaro. The supporters had barged into the police headquarters. Here supporters of Bolsonaro protesting against Silva's victory had set several vehicles on fire. Police fired tear gas shells to control the protesters.
Brazil's violence reminded America
On January 6, 2021, Trump's supporters entered the US Parliament. They instigated the violence, in which 5 people died and more than 100 were injured. Trump also described these supporters as revolutionaries in a tweet. All this happened to change the result of the 2020 presidential election, in which Joe Biden won.
