Opposition MPs included in the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) formed to discuss the Waqf Amendment Bill have written a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. In this letter, opposition MPs have demanded more time to present their views on the Waqf Bill. Opposition MPs may also meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on this issue on Tuesday.
Opposition MPs made these allegations against the JPC chairman.
Opposition MPs alleged that JPC chairman Jagdambika Pal is allegedly acting arbitrarily and if they are not given more time to present their side, they will withdraw their names from the committee. The opposition MPs included in the JPC include DMK's A Raja, Congress's Mohammad Javed, Imran Masood, AIMIM's Asaduddin Owaisi, AAP's Sanjay Singh, and TMC's Kalyan Banerjee, etc. Opposition MPs allege that JPC chairman Jagdambika Pal is making arbitrary decisions and is acting arbitrarily in fixing the date of the meeting and calling witnesses. He said that JPC is also like a small parliament, in which opposition MPs should also be heard and the bill should not be passed without following the prescribed procedure. There is strong opposition in the JPC meeting. BJP MPs allege that opposition MPs deliberately want to delay the bill.
BJP protests in Waqf property dispute in Karnataka
Politics has heated up in Karnataka over the Waqf Board claiming several hundred acres of farmers' land. BJP on Monday started a state-wide protest against the Congress government on this issue. BJP accused the Congress government of being involved in land jihad. Along with this, the opposition party also demanded the dismissal of Waqf Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan from the cabinet. After the announcement of the protest by the BJP, the Congress government appeared under pressure and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday directed the officials that all notices issued to the farmers should be immediately canceled and any unauthorized amendment in the land records without proper notice should also be canceled. However, despite this, the BJP decided to continue the protest.

It is worth noting that a section of farmers in the Vijayapura district of Karnataka alleged that their land has been marked as Waqf property, and similar allegations have surfaced from some other places as well. BJP state president BY Vijayendra led the protest in Ballari, while Leader of Opposition in the Assembly R Ashoka participated in the protest in KR Puram. Similarly, various party leaders joined the protest in different parts of the state. On Sunday, CM Siddaramaiah targeted the BJP for organizing protests despite the BJP directing the officials to withdraw all the notices sent to the farmers. The CM alleged that their motive is completely political, they have no interest in protecting the welfare of the farmers.
