The Lieutenant Governor and the Delhi Government are once again at loggerheads over the issue of water in the capital. Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena alleged that the Delhi Government's irresponsible attitude towards water has been seen for the past few days. Women, children, the elderly, and youth are seen running behind tankers for a bucket of water, risking their lives. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's promise of 24-hour water supply in Delhi has so far proved to be a hoax.
Saxena said that he has been told that Haryana and Uttar Pradesh are continuously giving their prescribed quota of water to Delhi. Despite this, the biggest reason for water shortage in Delhi is that 54 percent of the water being produced is not accounted for. 40 percent of the water is wasted during supply due to old and dilapidated pipelines.
He said that despite the Delhi Government spending thousands of crores of rupees in the last 10 years, neither the old pipelines could be repaired nor replaced. In such a situation, not enough new pipelines were laid. He alleged that the worst part is that this water is stolen and sold to the poor people by the tanker mafia.
