Weather Update: Fog wreaks havoc in North India... chill continues, icy winds increase shivering in UP

The fog that has been wreaking havoc across North India for the past several days subsided a bit on Wednesday morning, but no significant reduction in the cold was felt. The minimum temperature in Nawanshahr, Punjab was zero degrees Celsius. There was a slight increase in the minimum temperature in the capital. There was a slight improvement in aircraft flights due to a reduction in fog. Trains are still running late. 20 trains coming to Delhi were delayed by up to five hours.

 

Fog reduced in some states

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), fog has reduced in Bihar, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Northern Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi. Dense fog is seen in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Western Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Visibility near Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport was limited to only 200 meters.

 

There will be dense fog for five days

IMD said that very dense fog conditions are likely to persist over North India for the next five days. Delhi, which has been in the grip of a cold wave continuously for the last five days, saw an increase of almost two degrees in the minimum temperature on Wednesday, which was recorded at 5.7 degrees. This is two degrees less than normal. The effect of fog was not much in most of the districts of Uttar Pradesh, but people are facing a lot of problems due to the haze. There was a drizzle in Mau.

 

The impact on trains and flights continues

Trains and flights continued to be affected due to fog. Many trains are running late by hours. Many flights also had to be canceled. The minimum temperature of Meerut reached 3.6 degrees Celsius. Even Suryadev could not provide a feeling of warmth amidst the icy wind in Kanpur and nearby districts. The minimum temperature in Karnal in Haryana reached 3.4 degrees Celsius.

Due to dense fog in the morning, drivers faced a lot of trouble. Due to this, four died in accidents in Jind. Eight cattle died after a truck overturned in Kaithal. Fog and cold have badly affected life in Punjab. This is the first time in 22 years that dense fog has occurred in the state for more than two consecutive weeks on New Year.

 

Snowfall in Chardham, Auli, and Hemkund Sahib

The weather has changed in Uttarakhand. On Wednesday, there was snowfall in Badrinath, Kedarnath, Yamunotri, and Gangotri as well as Auli and Hemkund Sahib. Due to this, the cold has increased in the mountains. The lower areas of Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, and Pithoragarh remained cloudy throughout the day. Due to this, a decrease of two to four degrees Celsius was recorded in the maximum temperature. According to Bikram Singh, Director of the Meteorological Center, there are chances of snowfall in areas at a height of more than three thousand meters on Thursday.
