The Congress party is often targeted by the Bharatiya Janata Party in December 2006, that is, about 16 years ago, because of the speech given by the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, describing the country's resources as the first right of the minorities, especially the Muslims. Now once again there is a ruckus in Gujarat regarding the same speech of Manmohan Singh. Activists of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (BHP) and Bajrang Dal pasted posters at the state headquarters building of the Congress here early Friday, in which the name of the party office has been changed to 'Haj House'.
Why the ruckus now
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) said its workers took the action to register their protest against Gujarat Congress President Jagdish Thakor's recent remarks about minorities. Thakor, referring to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's old speech at an event on Wednesday, said that he supports his views that minorities should have the first right over the country's resources. He also said that Congress will not back down from this ideology, even if it faces defeat in the elections.
raging Hindutva organizations
On this statement by Gujarat Congress Chief, Hindu organizations got furious and created a ruckus. In a video shared by the VHP, protesters are seen writing 'Hajj House' on the walls of the Congress party office using spray colors. He also sprayed the pictures of Congress leaders on the banners. Gujarat VHP spokesperson Hitendra Singh Rajput said, "The Gujarat Congress President had said that the minorities have the first right on the country's resources. This party talks of secularism and equality on one hand and then does politics of appeasement for votes. We are against this religion-centric politics as it creates division in the country and society. This country belongs to all 135 crore citizens.
What did Manmohan Singh say?
During the UPA-1 government, Manmohan Singh gave a speech while addressing a program, on which there has been an uproar many times before. The BJP calls it an example of Muslim appeasement. In the 52nd meeting of the National Development Council (NDMC), Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that new schemes should be prepared for minorities, especially Muslims, to make the economic development process more equitable. He had said, “We have to devise new schemes to ensure that minorities, especially Muslim minorities, are empowered to share the benefits of development equitably. They should have the first right on the resources.
