Virat Kohli had recently decided to step down from the Test captaincy. Earlier in December 2021, he was stripped of the ODI captaincy, while he had already announced in September that he would step down as the captain of the shortest format after the T20 World Cup to be held in October-November 2021. However, the BCCI and selectors stripped him of the ODI captaincy and he later resigned as Test captain after a 2-1 loss against South Africa in January. Virat also admitted that his role as a batsman is more important than leading a team, which is why he stepped down as captain.
