The bill, passed by Parliament, is yet to be signed by President Joe Biden, which is now a formality. The bill gives India relief from sanctions specifically for buying S-400 missile defense systems from Russia. India bought this defense system from Russia in 2018 for US$ 5 billion. During that time there were sharp statements from America and even sanctions were said from Donald Trump. But now his stand is completely different and on the contrary, he is going to give relief by passing the bill from Parliament. Not only this, the interesting thing is that it had banned Turkey from trying to buy the same S-400 missile defense system.
Experts who understand the affairs of India and America believe that this is more a strategic move than a diplomatic one. India may not have supported America in stopping Russia, but India can play an important role in the balance of power with China in the Indo-Pacific region. In such a situation, America does not want to be alone in this area by losing an important partner like India. In particular, the inclination of Pakistan has increased rapidly toward China. In such a situation, whether it is the issue of Afghanistan or an attempt to establish a balance of power against China, it is in dire need of India. This is the reason why he did not show a Turkish attitude toward India and softened.
Relief to India, then what is the problem for America with Turkey?
America's relationship with Turkey is very complex. On the one hand, Turkey is a member of NATO, which is helping Ukraine. On the other hand, he also has good relations with Russia and taking advantage of this, he has recently agreed with Ukraine and Russia. After this agreement, it will be easier for Ukraine to export wheat. In such a situation, America imposed restrictions on him so that he could not transfer the defense technologies received from him to Russia. The US is said to have feared that the technology used in the F-35 fighter jets would be tampered with or perhaps decoded through the S-400 defense system.
