Bengal's voter list includes 4.7 million voters who are no longer alive. Of these, 3.4 million had Aadhaar cards. These figures are from January 2009 to the present. Additionally, there are 1.3 million deceased voters who did not have Aadhaar cards.
This information was shared during a meeting last Wednesday between Bengal's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Manoj Kumar Agarwal, and officials from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
A total of 76 million voters in Bengal
According to the 2025 voter list, Bengal has a total of 76 million voters. The state is currently undergoing a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list. The Election Commission has directed the CEOs of all states to coordinate with the UIDAI to verify voter data and identify any discrepancies.
A senior official from the CEO's office stated that the Election Commission has received numerous complaints regarding fake, deceased, absentee voters, and duplicate names in the electoral rolls. The UIDAI's data on deceased citizens will help identify such entries and remove them from the electoral rolls.
Officials may call applicants for verification.
After the publication of the draft voter list on December 9th, if it is found that an applicant has filled out a form with a name that has been removed from the Aadhaar database, the concerned Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) may call the applicant for verification. Election officials stated that since Aadhaar cards are linked to most bank accounts, they are also collecting information from banks. Banks have shared details of accounts that have not had their KYC updated for years.
This is helping identify deceased individuals whose names are still listed on the electoral rolls. Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) questioned that the UIDAI had stated that it does not maintain any data on Aadhaar deactivation, so how is it providing such information to the Election Commission? This is a conspiracy to delete the names of legitimate voters through the back door.
Council forms have been delivered to the home of Justice Jaymalya Bagchi, who hears SIR-related cases in the Supreme Court. Justice Bagchi's home is in the Gol Park area of Kolkata.
