Monday is the sixth day of the ongoing encounter in Kokernag of Anantnag in South Kashmir. So far, five terrorist hideouts have been destroyed in the ongoing operation in the Gadul forests of Kokarnag. A burnt body has also been recovered from here. It is believed that this body could be that of terrorist Uzair Khan. In such a situation, now the DNA samples of terrorist Uzair Khan's family members will be examined.
Three security officers were martyred in the encounter in Kokarnag on 13 September. TRF, a branch of the terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba, had taken responsibility for this terrorist attack. It is being told that terrorist Uzair, who has a bounty of Rs 10 lakh, is involved in this attack. Uzair Khan is a local terrorist, who is a resident of Naugam village of Kokernag. He has been associated with the terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba since June 2022. Senior officials DGP and ADGP are likely to reach the encounter site on Monday.
The security forces have now extended the scope of the operation to the surrounding villages. Blasts are being carried out at identified targets using mortars and other weapons. After the aggressive strategy of the security forces, the terrorists, who are aware of every nook and corner of the mountains, are constantly changing their locations. Officials said that security forces are using drones and helicopters to monitor the terrorists hiding in the dense forest. It is believed that terrorists have been taking shelter here since last Wednesday.
On Sunday morning, security forces fired several mortar shells towards the forest. Terrorists have made hideouts in natural caves in the dense forest. As a precautionary measure, security cover has been beefed up in the neighboring posh Kreri area to ensure that terrorists do not enter civilian settlements. Police believe that two to three terrorists are trapped in the forest area as the forces have laid a tight cordon.
Security forces are continuously maintaining a siege in the area. Almost all the roads leading to the hill where a possible hideout is suspected have been sealed. Visitors are being allowed to leave only after questioning.
Last Tuesday, intelligence was received about terrorists hiding in the Gadul forests of Kokernag. A joint team of police, army, and CRPF launched a search operation, but the terrorists could not be traced. The operation was stopped again when night fell. The operation started once again on Wednesday. Information was received that the terrorists were on the top of a hill. The security forces moved forward. The path that the forces had to take to reach the top of the hill was quite challenging.
As soon as the team reached the cave, they got a clear glimpse of the terrorists hiding there. They started firing indiscriminately. The personnel were stranded on a narrow road with nowhere to go, resulting in injuries to two army officers and a police officer.
Evacuating the injured officers from the encounter site was also quite challenging. He was taken to hospital by both other personnel and by helicopter, but could not be saved. During the initial firing, 19 RR Commanding Officer Colonel Manpreet Singh, Major Ashish Dhonchak, and DSP Humayun Bhat, son of former DIG Kashmir Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, were martyred.
