Of the 235 candidates for assembly and Lok Sabha by-elections to be held in different states, 44 have criminal cases registered against them. ADR analyzed the affidavits of 261 out of 265 candidates for the upcoming by-elections to 3 Lok Sabha and 30 assembly seats in 14 states. Voting on all these seats will be held on October 30. An analysis of the affidavits of 235 candidates for the assembly by-elections found that 44 candidates (19 percent) have declared criminal cases against themselves.
"Of these, 36 (15 percent) have reported serious criminal cases against themselves," the ADR report said. Average assets are 2.99 crores. Of the 235 candidates, 93 have declared debt on themselves, of which 18 are women.
