India is a major aviation market for the Asia Pacific region as well as the rest of the world and the demand for air travel is expected to remain strong. Global airlines group IATA said these things on Tuesday as the number of domestic air passengers in the country reached pre-Covid levels.

The Indian aviation sector is on a recovery path after being hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and airlines are expanding routes to meet the growing travel demand along with their employees. The daily number of domestic air passengers touched 4 lakh on October 9, which was close to pre-Covid levels and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday described the achievement as a 'great sign'.

India's civil aviation sector is poised for unprecedented growth in terms of passengers, aircraft, and airports. Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said in August that the country is estimated to have 400 million air passengers, including domestic and international, by 2027.

During an online briefing on Tuesday, IATA's regional vice president for Asia Pacific Philip Goh said the Indian market is very important and is already contributing in a big way to some parts of the world.

"I can see that many airline companies are starting, restarting, or expanding networks in India," he said. India is certainly a major market for the region and the rest of the world.
