Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has issued new guidelines for TV channels. Under this, news channels have been barred from covering terrorist attacks in Pakistan.

According to Pakistan's The News International newspaper, TV channels have given the order to comply with the 2015 Electronic Media Code of Conduct, which has now been directed to stop the coverage of terror attacks.

Terrorists take advantage of the media

As per the instructions of PEMRA, many times this news is shown immediately not even verified. Thus anarchy arises. Not only this, but after seeing all this, terrorists also use media for political advertising. In addition, media coverage of terrorist incidents provides an opportunity for terrorist groups to project their strength and compare their strength with that of a rival terrorist organization.

Journalistic principles not being followed

Issuing instructions, PEMRA said- News channels were ordered many times to follow the code of conduct, but this did not happen. Channels compete to show the news first and fastest. In the race to show breaking news, they forget the principles of journalism.

Showing pictures related to the crime scene is a violation of the principles of journalism. The employees of TV channels put their lives in danger as well as their presence on the spot also creates problems in rescue operations.

Terrorist attacks increased in the last 3 months

This instruction of PEMRA has come to the fore after increased terrorist incidents in the last 3 months. About two months ago, the driver blew himself up with a bomb when the police stopped a taxi for a routine check in the Red Zone of Islamabad. A total of 4 policemen including an officer were killed in this attack.

In early February 2023, there was a fidayeen attack on a mosque in Peshawar's Police Lines. Then around 500 people were present in the mosque during the afternoon prayer. The fidayeen attacker was present in the middle row. He blew himself up. 110 policemen were killed.

On February 18, some terrorists attacked the 5-storey police headquarters located in the Shahrah-e-Faisal area of Karachi. Four including a police officer, and a ranger lost their lives in the attack. 18 people were injured. Three terrorists were also killed.
