Even after becoming the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh was a simple person. To a large extent, he kept moving forward considering himself as a middle-class person. Former IPS Aseem Arun, now a minister in the UP government, was Dr. Manmohan Singh's bodyguard for three years. Aseem has written, that I was Dr. Manmohan Singh's bodyguard for about three years from 2004. At that time he was in the Special Protection Group 'SPG'. According to Aseem, Dr. Manmohan Singh did not like the shiny black BMW car. He used to say, Aseem, my car is 'Maruti 800'. Whenever his convoy passed before Maruti, he looked at it to his heart's content.
According to Aseem Arun, the innermost circle of the PM's security in the SPG is the 'Close Protection Team'. Aseem had the opportunity to lead it. AIG CPT is the person who can never stay away from the PM. If only one bodyguard can stay with him, then this guy will be with him. Aseem wrote in his post, that in such a situation, it was my responsibility to stay with him like his shadow. Dr. Saheb had only one car of his own - 'Maruti 800'. He was very fond of that car. It used to be parked behind a shiny black BMW in the PM House.
Manmohan Singh used to tell me repeatedly, Aseem, I do not like to travel in this car, my car is this (Maruti). I used to explain that Sir, this car is not for your luxury, its security features are such that the SPG has taken it. Whenever the convoy passed in front of Maruti, he would always look at it to his heart's content. As if repeating the resolution that I am a middle-class person and it is my job to worry about the common man. The car worth crores belongs to the PM, this is my Maruti.
The central government withdrew the Special Protection Group (SPG) security given to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2019. Then the Union Home Ministry said, after taking inputs from all the agencies and doing regular evaluation, it has been decided to give Z Plus security to Manmohan Singh. Before him, the security cover of former Prime Ministers HD Deve Gowda and VP Singh was withdrawn. Dr. Manmohan Singh's daughters also withdrew themselves from the SPG security cover. Dr. Singh did not react when his SPG security was withdrawn.
