Bangladesh has strongly condemned the violent protest outside its Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, India. During this demonstration, the mob reportedly expressed their protest by setting fire to the effigy of interim government chief Muhammad Yunus as well as the Bangladeshi national flag.
The incident took place on Thursday (28 November 2024) during a rally organized by the Bongio Hindu Jagran Manch. Bongio Hindu Jagran Manch is a Hindu organization that is protesting against the alleged attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh and the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das there.
The protesters had reached the commission by breaking the barricades.
In a statement issued on Friday (29 November), the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry expressed deep concern over the incident and urged New Delhi to ensure the safety of all its diplomatic missions and personnel in India. 'Sense of insecurity prevails among members of the Deputy High Commission'
Bangladesh called on the Indian government to take immediate steps to prevent such incidents in the future and ensure the safety of its diplomatic staff. "Although the situation is currently under control, a sense of insecurity prevails among members of the Deputy High Commission," the Foreign Ministry statement said.
External Affairs Minister expressed concern over the attack on Hindus.
Meanwhile, India has expressed its concern over the treatment of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. Addressing Parliament on Friday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar urged the Bangladeshi government to ensure the safety of minority communities and their places of worship. Tensions have escalated since the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from office in August, even as reports of violence continue in the interim government led by Yunus.
Protests by Hindus started after the arrest of Chinmoy Das.
Let us tell you that this protest started after the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a former member of the International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in Bangladesh, on charges of treason. Following his arrest, the court there had refused to grant bail to Das earlier this week, following which members of the Hindu community staged protests in various parts of Bangladesh, including Dhaka and Chittagong.
