The India-Bangladesh border, one of the most dangerous borders in the world, has always been sensitive. The 4096 km long international border between India and Bangladesh is the fifth largest land border in the world. With the coming into existence of Bangladesh, both nations shared an unconditional relationship.
India's support to Bangladesh during the Liberation War against Pakistan was very important. However, over time this border started posing many challenges for India. In such a situation, it is very important to know how much danger this border poses to India.
The border passes through five states
The length of the international border between India and Bangladesh is 4096.70 km, which is directly connected to five states of India, Bengal (2216.70 km), Assam (263 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Tripura (856 km) and Mizoram (318 km). This entire region has a vast area of plains, water, hills, and forest area and its population is also very high.
Fencing work started in 1986
Given the various threats like terrorism, smuggling, infiltration, and crime present on this border, the Government of India started the work of fencing it in the year 1986. However, after a lot of efforts, by March 2023, out of a total of 4096 km, 3180.65 km of fencing had been done. The target of the Government of India was to fence the remaining 915.35 km of the border by March 2024, which is yet to be completed.
Threat situation from the border
India has always been facing many threats from the Bangladesh border. These include terrorist activities, infiltration into India, entry of illegal immigrants, human and drug trafficking, smuggling, and many types of crimes. According to official figures, from the year 2020 to March 2024, items worth about Rs 8500 crore were seized by the Border Security Forces from the India-Bangladesh border alone.
What are the important issues?
India must stop the illegal entry of Bangladeshi citizens from the Bangladesh border, complete the construction of strong fencing on the border, and continuous security monitoring of it. Along with this, security needs to stop terrorism, counterfeit Indian currency, and other crimes including cattle smuggling from across the border. At the same time, water disputes like problems of shared management of water of Ganga, Brahmaputra, and other rivers also remain a cause of trouble.
Increasing problems in Indian states
There is no doubt that local security problems have been increasing due to illegal immigrants in the Indian states bordering the border. This has increased the pressure on the population of the states as well as social pressures like lack of resources.
Latest risk
The coup in Bangladesh on Monday has created political instability there. As a result, the possibility of a decrease in security on the border has increased. Along with anarchic elements, terrorists and criminals can try to fulfill their nefarious intentions by crossing the border and terrorist activities can also increase. Along with this, the risk of migration of citizens due to fear has also increased, which can create disputes and humanitarian problems in the border areas.
Preparation of border security from India's side
After the latest developments, a high alert has been issued on this border. Border Security Force (BSF) Acting Director General Daljit Singh Chaudhary has reached Kolkata and is closely monitoring the situation in the neighboring country. The deployment of soldiers on the border has been increased and along with canceling the leave of all the personnel, they have been instructed to remain alert.
Apart from this, India is engaged in increasing security on the border by fencing the border, arranging high lights, using boats and floating border posts, and using advanced technology equipment like hand-held thermal imagers, night vision devices, twin telescopes, and unmanned aerial vehicles.
Biggest flaws in border security
The condition of some parts of the fence built so far on the Bangladesh border is weak and they need to be repaired. The lack of quick response along with intensive monitoring in the border areas also remains a big flaw. Lack of coordination between the local administration and the security forces on this border also plays a big role.
