Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the 16th BRICS summit in Kazan. During this, PM Modi invited Putin to visit India for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit next year. The Prime Minister's Office said in a press release that the two leaders reviewed bilateral cooperation in various fields, including political, economic, defense, energy, and people-to-people relations.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi thanked Putin for his invitation. He appreciated the Russian presidency of BRICS and its efforts to strengthen bilateralism, advance sustainable development, and advance global governance reform. The PM's Office said in a press release that the two leaders also reviewed bilateral cooperation in several fields, including political, economic, defense, energy, and people-to-people relations.
This demand was placed before Putin.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said in a media briefing that Prime Minister Narendra Modi also discussed the issue of early release of the remaining Indian citizens in the Russian army during the bilateral meeting with Vladimir Putin. With the support of the Russian side, many Indian citizens have been able to return to India in recent months. We understand that the embassy is currently working on about 20 cases with the Russian side and we are very hopeful that all these individuals will be released soon and sent back to India very soon.
India ready to contribute to bringing peace in the region - Modi
In the meeting, Modi and Putin also shared their views on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Prime Minister Modi reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy are the way forward to resolve the conflict. He informed President Putin about his engagement with the Ukrainian leadership and said that India is ready to contribute to bringing peace to the region. Apart from this, both sides also expressed satisfaction over the ongoing defense cooperation and agreed to hold the next meeting of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Cooperation Group on Defense Cooperation in Moscow soon.
When Putin took a dig at PM Modi
In a post on X, PM Modi said, "Had a wonderful meeting with President Putin. The relationship between India and Russia is very deep. Our conversation focused on how to further strengthen our bilateral partnership in various fields." The Prime Minister said that the opening of India's new consulate in Kazan will further strengthen the relationship between India and the Russian city. Reflecting the close ties between India and Russia and his rapport with PM Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin quipped that we have such a relationship that I thought you did not need any translation. PM Modi also started smiling after hearing the translation of this statement of President Putin.
