This video is from 18 September 2022, when more than 10 thousand Khalistan supporters gathered in the Canadian city of Brampton. These people had gathered in the program of 'Sikhs for Justice' to hold a 'referendum' on the question of making Khalistan a separate country from India. The event was organized despite strong opposition from the Government of India.
Canada's 'referendum' in support of Khalistan
America's Sikh for Justice ie SFJ organization is conducting referendums in support of Khalistan in many countries of the world. In this sequence, this program was organized in Canada on 18 September. According to the Independent's report, about 10 to 12 thousand people took part in it.
The Indian embassy, complaining to the Canadian Foreign Ministry, opposed the conduct of the 'referendum'. However, Canada refused to ban the program, citing freedom of opinion.
Immediately after the event, the Government of India issued an alert for the Indian people living in Canada to be vigilant.
At the same time, on 22 September, the Foreign Spokesperson of the Government of India, Arindam Bagchi, called this referendum ridiculous. He said that this is a conspiracy by fundamentalist groups to break the country.
Let us now know about the Khalistani movement….
The Khalistan movement started 93 years ago in 1929
This is from the year 1929. In the Lahore session of Congress, Motilal Nehru proposed Poorna Swaraj. During this three types of groups opposed this proposal.
The first group- was the Muslim League under the leadership of Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
The second group was the Dalits. Which was led by Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. Ambedkar was demanding rights for the Dalits.
The third group- faction was of Shiromani Akali Dal led by Master Tara Singh.
At this time, for the first time, Tara Singh demanded a separate state for the Sikhs. In 1947 this demand turned into a movement. It was named as Punjabi Suba Movement.
At the time of independence, Punjab was divided into two parts. Shiromani Akali Dal was demanding a separate Sikh suba i.e. Sikh state on a linguistic basis in India itself. The States Reorganization Commission formed in independent India refused to accept this demand.
For 19 years there were agitations and demonstrations for a separate Sikh province all over Punjab. During this time the incidents of violence started increasing. Eventually, in 1966 the Indira Gandhi government decided to divide Punjab into three parts. Sikh-majority Punjab, Hindi-speaking Haryana, and a third part Chandigarh.
Chandigarh was made a Union Territory. It was made the capital of both the new territories. Apart from this, some mountainous areas of Punjab were merged with Himachal Pradesh.
Despite this big decision, many people were not happy with this partition. Some were unhappy with the territories given to Punjab, while others were unhappy with the idea of a common capital.
43 years ago in London Jagjit Singh Chauhan proposed Khalistan
Separatists living in Canada and Europe have been demanding Khalistan for more than 40 years. In 1979 Jagjit Singh Chauhan moved from India to London and proposed Khalistan. Singh had presented a map for this Khalistan. In 1969, Jagjit Singh also contested the assembly elections in Punjab.
Jagjit Singh Chauhan created a ruckus around the world by issuing the new Khalistani currency in Britain. In 1980, his passport was canceled by the Government of India declaring him a fugitive. Although Jagjit continued to support the Khalistan resolution even after returning to the country, he opposed the violence.
More rights for Sikhs sought from 'Anandpur Sahib Resolution
The Akali Dal got a lot of political advantage from the Punjabi movement. After this, under the leadership of Parkash Singh Badal, the party gave a tough fight to Congress in the 1967 and 1969 assembly elections.
However, the 1972 election proved to be a bad one for the rising political graph of the Akalis. Congress came to power. This forced the Shiromani Akali Dal to think.
In 1973, the Akali Dal demanded autonomy, that is, more rights for its state. The demand for this autonomy was sought through the Anandpur Sahib Resolution.
In the Anandpur Sahib Resolution, the Sikhs demanded a separate constitution for a more autonomous Punjab. By 1980, support among Sikhs grew in favor of the Anandpur Sahib Resolution.
Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale used to incite every Sikh to kill 32 Hindus
Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale was a staunch supporter of the Anand Sahib resolution. Bhindranwale, who started his journey as a ragi, later became a terrorist and a big face of the Khalistan movement.
Well-known Sikh journalist Khushwant Singh said that Bhindranwale used to instigate every Sikh to kill 32 Hindus. He said that this would solve the problem of Sikhs forever.
In 1982, Bhindranwale joined hands with the Shiromani Akali Dal and started the non-cooperation movement. This non-cooperation movement later turned into an armed rebellion.
During this, whoever opposed Bhindranwale came on his hit list. Due to this, Khalistan terrorists killed the founder and editor of Punjab Kesari, Lala Jagat Narayan. The terrorists did not spare even the newspaper hawker.
Sanjay Gandhi, the son of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, is said to have supported Bhindranwale to counter the growing political influence of the Akali Dal at that time.
