The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) is set to be conducted twice a year from the next session on the lines of JEE Main and NEET.
University Grants Commission Chairman Prof. M Jagadesh Kumar on Tuesday said that CUET will neither remove the relevance of board examinations nor will it encourage the culture of coaching. Rather this exam will give equal chance to all the board candidates.
The UGC president said that the state board students need not worry about the undergraduate course admission process. It will not harm. CUET will not be limited to admission in central universities only, as many reputed private universities have indicated that they are also willing to use CUET scores for admission to undergraduate courses.
He said, this year CUET will be conducted once. But NTA will consider conducting the exam at least twice a year from the next session. Kumar said central universities can fix their minimum eligibility criteria. No coaching will be required for this entrance exam, hence the question of promoting coaching culture does not arise. The exam will be completely based on the 12th syllabus.
Universities will be able to set standards up to 60 to 70 percent marks on the board
Jagdish Kumar said the university will decide the standard of marks of the board on their basis. Some universities can do it 60 percent and some 70 percent. CUET will do away with the requirement of getting 100% marks on the board. After this, the situation of not getting admission even after getting 98 percent marks will end, he said.
