The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is planning to make the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME) safer by increasing fines on banned vehicles. The expressway does not allow two-wheelers and three-wheelers to ply. NHAI, along with local authorities, is planning to increase the traffic fine by 20 times to stop two-wheelers and three-wheelers along with other restricted vehicles on the expressway. DMEs currently face a fine of Rs 1,000 for violating this traffic rule.
The last segment of the 60-km Delhi-Meerut Expressway, which connects Ghaziabad to Akshardham Temple, Delhi, is one of the busiest stretches of the road. People traveling between these two places often take the help of expressways to avoid traffic jams. Small and slow vehicles are allowed in the service lane, while scooters and bikes are prohibited on the main part of the expressway. The speed limit for vehicles on the main road from the Ghazipur intersection towards Meerut is 100 kmph.
Two-wheelers and three-wheelers are often seen flouting traffic rules and plying on this stretch of expressway close to Delhi-NCR. There have been some fatal accidents on this part of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway in the recent past. Last week, an 18-year-old girl along with two others died when an unidentified vehicle rammed a two-wheeler. This incident has once again raised questions about the non-implementation of traffic rules on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway.
NHAI and local police officials feel that increasing the fine from Rs 1,000 to Rs 20,000 at present will help keep two-wheelers and three-wheelers off the Delhi-Meerut Expressway. A final decision on the increased fine is expected before the second week of this month. The new rule will be implemented soon.
The Delhi-Meerut Expressway was opened for public use on April 1 this year, three years after it was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2018. The project has been developed for Rs 8,346 crore. The Delhi-Meerut Expressway promises to cover the distance of about two hours between the two cities in just 45 minutes.
