Yamuna Floods: Yamuna below danger mark in Delhi, water level is decreasing rapidly, but there is danger of diseases.

The Yamuna River in Delhi has reached below the danger mark of 205.33 meters. Due to this, the water in the river is decreasing rapidly. Normal amount of water is being released from Hathinikund Barrage every hour, while the water discharge from Delhi is about four times more. Due to this, life is expected to return to normal in flood-affected areas in a day or two.

Silt is being removed from flood-affected areas, such as Yamuna Bazaar, Monastery Market. Silt is deposited up to three to four feet in people's houses. The maximum water level of the Yamuna reached 207.48 meters on August 4 this season, but the situation was seen to be normal again only three days later, on August 7. In view of the flood in 2023, it was believed that this time too, the situation of waterlogging could be prolonged, but due to the completion of flood preparations in advance, the situation seems to be improving quickly.

Preparations to deal with the flood were effective.

The gates of all the barrages of Delhi including ITO, were already opened completely. This did not cause any obstruction in the flow of the Yamuna. For the last flood, the four closed gates of the ITO Barrage and the soil and construction waste lying in the river flow path due to the Delhi-Meerut Rapid Rail Project were a big obstacle. Due to this, Delhi had to face floods on a large scale.

Traffic is not closed on the ITO and Ring Road.

The sewage system at the ITO intersection was changed afresh about two months ago. Due to this, there was no waterlogging due to sewage overflow at this place during the flood in the Yamuna this time. In 2023, the road from the ITO intersection to the Rajghat-Sarai Kale Khan flyover looked like a pond. Many times, the traffic on this route also had to be closed due to excessive waterlogging. This time, there was no waterlogging here at all. Similarly, this time there was waterlogging on the Ring Road for about 20 hours, but the water was removed soon with the help of pumps. Meanwhile, the traffic continued to move from here.

Four times more water is being emptied from Delhi.

Currently, about 40 thousand cusecs of water is being released from Hathinikund Barrage every hour, while more than one lakh cusecs of water is being released every hour from Okhla Barrage in Delhi. It is expected that the flow of the Yamuna will also slow down on Monday. By 7 pm, the water level of the Yamuna was recorded at 205.38. The water is going down by about two cm every hour.

Yamuna water level decreased ... no difficulties.

The decrease in the water level of the Yamuna has definitely brought some relief, but the difficulties have not reduced. For the flood victims, spending day and night in tents without resources is becoming a cause of trouble. As soon as the water level decreases, people are diving into the water and going towards their homes so that they can take out the remaining things.

The victims say that whatever was there due to the flood has been destroyed. Now there is a shortage of resources. Sumit Kumar, a resident of Yamuna Khadar, said that he has lost everything in the flood. Even the important documents like the Aadhar card, voter ID card, and school mark sheet, along with other important certificates, were washed away in the Yamuna. On the other hand, Lavkush, a resident of Purana Usmanpur, said that it is very difficult to live in these tents. We have to depend on others for everything from food to drinking water. He said that some NGOs come here, who are helping now, but it is not enough. Some people get food in the tents, and some do not. Apart from this, there is also a lack of medical services in the camps.

Increasing risk of disease due to mosquitoes

The flood victims said that mosquitoes bite at night in the relief camp, due to which spending the night here is no less than a challenge. The possibility of mosquito-borne disease is increasing. Spraying is being done by the administration to prevent mosquito-borne diseases in the relief camp.
