Pollution has worried the countries of the world including India. Different measures are being taken for this all over the world. A report has been prepared by WEF in collaboration with the Boston Consulting Group. In this report, it has been said that the supply chain of eight goods is the cause of 50 percent of pollution in the world.
These eight items are the supply chain of food, construction, fashion, FMCG, electronics, auto, professional service (business travel and office), and other freight. The report said that the movement of goods does not cause as much pollution as their movement.
The report says that the movement of goods in the world causes a lot of pollution. If measures are taken to reduce their pollution, then the price of goods will increase by only 1 to 4 percent, but the burden of pollution from the world will be reduced significantly.
This is how we can win the war against climate change
The report says that reducing carbon emissions from the supply chain can make a big difference. This can win the war against climate change. 90 percent of the world's business is small and medium enterprises, which work in tandem with the supply chain. According to the report, more carbon emissions are involved in delivering a product to the consumer than running a company. So reducing emissions from the supply chain would be more beneficial.
Which supply chain generates how many global emissions?
The food supply chain is responsible for 25% of carbon emissions. At the same time, 10 percent from construction (cement, steel, and plastic, etc.), 5 percent from fashion, 5 percent from FMCG, 5 percent from electronics, 2 percent from auto, 2 percent from professional service (business travel office) and 5 percent from other freight. it happens.
40 percent pollution will be reduced at a very low cost
The technology that will be adopted to reduce this pollution by 40 percent, will not have much effect on the price of the goods. For example, the price of a car like automotive will increase by about 2 percent. At the same time, the cost of fashion (such as clothing) will increase by 2 percent, the cost of food by 4 percent, the cost of manufacturing by 3 percent, and the cost of electronics by only 1 percent. We also need to make consumers aware of how buying green products is a better option, says Lenzing CEO Stefan Dobokzi. They can make a big impact by paying a little more.
what to do in which sector
Food-plastic packaging will have to be reduced and agriculture will have to be done without cutting forests.
Construction – The demolition waste generated by the demolition of a building etc., its cement, aluminum, or plastic will have to be recycled. Renewable energy and low-emission transport will have to be promoted at every level.
Fashion and others- sewing, spinning will have to use less energy-consuming machinery. Similarly, in the rest of the sector, recycling of plastics or products, renewable energy can bring down emissions drastically. At the same time, 10 percent pollution can be reduced by conducting virtual meetings in professional service.
what will the company do?
According to the report, big companies of the world are also struggling to get the data, so that the goal of reducing pollution can be made. Emissions are deep in the supply chain, so the effort of just one company and a few people will not make an impact. Rather, at the industry level, everyone will have to work together.
According to the Green House Gas Protocol, emissions can be divided into three parts. The first will have to be controlled at the facility, which involves onsite fuel combustion. In the second part, heat/cooling can be procured with the help of third parties and the emissions from electricity and steam can be reduced. In the third phase, the value chain emissions will have to be reduced. At the same time, emissions can be reduced by changing the product design, raw material procurement strategy, using the product sold, working with the supplier and other partners in the sector. At the same time, measures like recycling, increasing the capacity of materials and processes, renewable energy, renewable heat, natural remedies, change in fuel will also have to be taken.
