NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) has made it clear that if Finland and Sweden apply to join the military organization, they will be granted membership through a short and fast process. This information was given by NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Sunday at a meeting of the foreign ministers of 30 member countries of the organization in Berlin. In Helsinki on Sunday, Finnish President Sauli Niinisto made it clear that his country will apply for NATO membership very soon. Following a signal from the Swedish government, the ruling party there has lobbied to join NATO.
Many countries had told the need
Several member countries, including Germany, expressed the need to expedite the process of joining Finland and Sweden in NATO. German Foreign Minister Annalena Bierbock assured of doing everything possible to expedite the process. In the meeting of foreign ministers, NATO Deputy Chief Mircia Goanna expressed hope that the formalities related to the membership of the two countries will be completed soon and unopposed.
President announced
After meeting with the government's foreign policy committee on Sunday, Ninisto announced an early application to join NATO. Earlier on Saturday, Ninisto had telephonic discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding NATO membership. Putin has said that Finland's joining NATO will damage bilateral ties. It should be noted that Finland and Russia share a border about 1,300 km long.
America engaged in cooling down Turkey's opposition
Ninisto spoke on the phone with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, who opposes the inclusion of Finland and Sweden in NATO. He has also expressed his desire to meet Erdogan. It is noteworthy that to join NATO, the consent of all its member countries is necessary. While expressing displeasure over the issue of support to Kurdish terrorists, Erdogan has stated to veto the applications of Finland and Sweden.
