The administration's move is sure to anger rights activists and several US lawmakers, as Saudi Arabia has tightened oil production cuts and crackdowns on peaceful critics at home and abroad.

The lawsuit was filed in a Washington court by the fiancee of slain journalist Jamal Khashoggi and a DC-based rights group founded by him. It charged about 20 aides, officials, and others, including the crown prince, with plotting and carrying out Khashoggi's murder at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
