The Ministry of Home Affairs has clarified the report of providing Rohingya refugees apartments, EWS flats, and police protection in the Bakkarwala area of outer Delhi. The Home Ministry said that no such instruction has been given regarding Rohingya illegal migrants. A Home Ministry spokesman said that the Rohingya are to be kept in detention centers as per law until they are sent back to their country.
Earlier, Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had tweeted on Wednesday, due to which controversy arose. He wrote, "India has always welcomed those who sought asylum in the country. In a historic decision, all Rohingya refugees will be shifted to flats located in the Bakkarwala area of Delhi. They will be given basic facilities by the UNHCR (United Nations for Refugees)". Identity card issued by the High Commissioner and round the clock security of Delhi Police will be provided." The minister also criticized those who have questioned the country's refugee policy. He said that such people would be disappointed by this move.
The VHP had objected to this. On Hardeep Puri's tweet, Vishwa Hindu Parishad Central Working President Alok Kumar appealed to the Central Government to make arrangements to send Rohingyas out of India instead of housing them in Delhi. Alok Kumar further says that Hindu refugees from Pakistan are living in inhuman conditions in the Majnu-ka-Tila area of Delhi, in such a situation the reward given to Rohingyas becomes even more condemnable. The central government should withdraw its decision immediately.
After this, the Ministry of Home Affairs had to come to clarify. The Home Ministry said that the Delhi government had proposed to relocate the Rohingya refugees to the new location. The Home Ministry says that it had directed the Delhi government to ensure that they are retained at their present location. The ministry also said that talks are on to send them back to the country concerned through the Ministry of External Affairs. A Home Ministry spokesperson said that the Delhi government has not declared the existing settlement of Rohingya as a detention center, it has been asked to do so immediately.
