Amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, India faces the threat of an oil crisis. Meanwhile, the US has made a significant decision regarding India. The US has granted India a temporary 30-day exemption from purchasing Russian oil.
In fact, the same US Treasury Department, which had been pressuring India to reduce Russian oil imports, has now granted Indian refineries permission to purchase Russian oil. This will provide relief to Russian tankers stranded at sea, unable to find buyers.
Why were the tankers stranded at sea?
According to news agency Reuters, Russian oil tankers were stranded at sea because their oil was not being unloaded immediately due to new US sanctions and uncertainty regarding payment and insurance. The US had imposed strict sanctions on Russian oil tankers, raising questions about insurance, payment, and port entry for many ships.
During this time, Indian oil refiners also began to wait, fearing that purchasing oil from Russia would be against regulations. Therefore, the ships were held at sea. Now, with the waiver granted by the US, there's every possibility that these oil tankers will find buyers.
What did the US say?
This move by the US was made in an effort to stabilize global energy markets amid rising tensions in the Middle East. Describing India as an essential partner for the United States, US Secretary of State Bessant wrote in a post on X, "Oil and gas production has reached an all-time high as a result of President Trump's energy agenda."
30-Day Temporary Waiver
To keep oil flowing to the global market, the Treasury Department is issuing a 30-day temporary waiver to allow Indian refineries to purchase Russian oil. This deliberate, short-term measure will not provide any significant financial benefit to the Russian government, as it only authorizes transactions related to oil stranded at sea.
India is a vital partner of the United States, and we fully expect New Delhi to increase its purchases of US oil. This interim measure will ease the pressure posed by Iran's attempt to hold global energy hostage."
Airfares in India have increased manifold due to the war in the Middle East, with over 700 flights cancelled.
On Monday, one-way economy class fares on a direct European airline from London to Mumbai rose to nearly ₹2.9 lakh, while business class fares on the same flight soared to a staggering ₹9 lakh.
