Why is Army Day celebrated?

Army Day is celebrated on January 15th, commemorating the day in 1949 when Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa took over from his British predecessor, General Sir F.R.R. Bucher, as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army.
