The fifth Kalvari class submarine of Project 75, Yard 11879, was handed over to the Navy today, the Indian Navy said on Tuesday. Officials said, under Project 75, indigenous construction of six submarines of Scorpene design is involved.
These submarines are being built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited Mumbai in collaboration with M/s Naval Group, France. Navy officials told that the submarine will soon be inducted into the Indian Navy. This will further increase the strength of the Indian Navy.
What is Project 75?
The IK Gujral government had decided to acquire 25 submarines. The construction of the P75 submarines took 30 years of planning. In 2005, India and France signed a $3.75 billion contract to build six Scorpene-class submarines. Mazagon Docks Shipbuilders Limited in India and DCNS in France look after its work. The first of the six, INS Kalvari, was commissioned in 2017, five years behind schedule.
