In the coming 1-2 years, you can get fuel for 60-62 rupees per liter. Now the price of petrol is running around 108 rupees. To prevent air pollution caused by petrol-diesel vehicles and to reduce fuel prices, governments around the world are working on ethanol-blended fuel. In India too, ethanol is being seen as an alternative to petrol and diesel. This will also increase the mileage of the vehicles.
The use of 5% ethanol was started in our country in 2008, and it has now reached 10%. Now the government is going to start the process to go from E-20 (20% Ethanol + 80% Petrol) to E-80 (80% Ethanol + 20% Petrol) from 22nd April by implementing the National Bio-Fuel Policy. From April only flex-fuel-compliant vehicles will be sold. Along with this, old vehicles can be changed into ethanol-compliant vehicles.
On the occasion of the inauguration of the ongoing Auto Expo in Greater Noida, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said, 'I have been dreaming of flex-fuel since 2004'.
Brazil already has flex-fuel technology. The ethanol pavilion has been set up at Auto Expo 2023. Here a glimpse of the future vehicles running on flex-fuel was seen. Here we are telling you about the vehicles running on ethanol…
What is ethanol?
Ethanol is a type of alcohol made from the fermentation of starch and sugar. It is mixed with petrol and used as an eco-friendly fuel in vehicles. Ethanol is primarily produced from sugarcane juice, but ethanol can also be produced from starch-containing materials such as corn, rotten potatoes, cassava, and rotted vegetables.
1G ethanol: First-generation ethanol is made from sugarcane juice, sweet beet, rotten potatoes, sweet sorghum, and corn.
2G ethanol: Second-generation ethanol is made from cellulose and lignocellulosic materials such as rice husk, wheat husk, corncob, bamboo, and woody biomass.
3G Biofuel: Third-generation biofuel will be made from algae. Right now work is going on.
What is the advantage of mixing ethanol?
Blending ethanol in petrol will help in reducing the pollution caused by the use of petrol. Using this, vehicles emit 35% less carbon monoxide. Ethanol also reduces emissions of sulfur dioxide and hydrocarbons.
Due to the 35% oxygen present in ethanol, this fuel also reduces the emission of nitrogen oxides. This is the reason that 63 thousand of cars emit as much carbon annually. Saves that much carbon radiation i.e. about 320 kilometric tonnes.
What is the benefit to the common man: A car running on petrol mixed with ethanol heats up much less as compared to petrol. Alcohol evaporates quickly in ethanol, due to which the engine does not heat up quickly. Apart from this, it will be much cheaper than crude oil. This is also expected to provide relief from inflation.
The benefit to the farmers: With the increase in the use of ethanol, the income of the farmers will also increase. Because ethanol is made from sugarcane, corn, and many other crops. Sugar mills will get a new source of income and their income will increase. Farmers have benefited from Rs 21 thousand crores from ethanol.
