The people of Iran are on the streets, protesting violently against the Khamenei government. Anger erupted after rising inflation, a struggling economy, and a plummeting currency, leading to massive crowds taking to the streets and chanting anti-government slogans. More than 500 people have reportedly died in the anti-government movement so far, while thousands have been arrested. Meanwhile, a news report about the escalating violence in Iran is rapidly going viral on social media. It claims that Iranian police have arrested several Indian citizens.
Six Indians arrested, Iran denies the claim.
However, Iran has completely rejected these reports. Amidst the protests spreading across the country, including Tehran, it was claimed that Iranian police had arrested six Indians. The post claimed that Iranian police had arrested some Iranian collaborators along with 10 Afghan and 6 Indian citizens. India's Ambassador to Iran, Mohammad Fathali, has called the reports of the arrest of Indians completely false.
What did Ambassador Mohammad Fathali say?
Sharing a screenshot of the post making the claim about the Indians on the social media platform X, the Iranian ambassador said that the news being spread on some foreign X accounts about the developments in Iran is completely false. He requested everyone to obtain news only from reliable sources.
What has happened in Iran so far?
At least 544 people have reportedly been killed in the crackdown on nationwide protests in Iran. The Associated Press, citing a US-based human rights activist news agency, reported that more than 10,600 people have been detained during the protests that have been going on for more than two weeks. The agency reported that the dead include 496 protesters and 48 members of the security forces. However, the Iranian government has not released the total number of casualties. Internet and telephone services have been restricted across the country, making independent verification of the situation difficult.
Meanwhile, Reza Pahlavi, the son of the deposed Shah of Iran, has urged security forces to "stand with the people" and also appealed to protesters to stay off the streets.
