A tense atmosphere prevailed at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) after students protested following the Supreme Court's rejection of bail applications for Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam. During the protest, allegedly offensive and controversial slogans were raised against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
According to a purported video of the protest held on Monday night, slogans were chanted against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The incident occurred during a protest organized on the anniversary of the attack on students at the JNU campus on January 5, 2020. The protest, organized by the JNU Students' Union, saw students expressing their anger over the denial of bail to Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid. The university administration has launched an investigation into the matter and is trying to ascertain the facts related to the incident.
Aditi Mishra, President of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union, said that every year, students hold protests to condemn the violence that took place on campus on January 5, 2020. Mishra stated, "All the slogans raised during the protest were ideological and did not constitute a personal attack on anyone. They were not directed at any particular individual."
It may be recalled that on January 5, 2020, violence erupted on the campus when a mob of masked individuals entered the campus and targeted students in three hostels. They attacked with sticks, stones, and iron rods, beating the hostel residents and vandalizing windows, furniture, and personal belongings. The campus remained in chaos for about two hours, resulting in injuries to at least 28 people, including JNU Students' Union President Aishe Ghosh.
Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra said: "This is just their desperation."
Delhi government minister Kapil Mishra said, "It's not just about JNU; there are some people who raise these kinds of anti-national, anti-religious slogans. They also raise slogans for Afzal Guru, against the Supreme Court's decision, in support of terrorists, and in support of Naxalites, but ultimately, their slogans remain just slogans." "Where there were Naxalites, the Naxalites have been eliminated; where there were terrorists, the terrorists have been eliminated; and the Supreme Court has given its verdict against those who conspired against Delhi, so this is just their desperation."
This is reprehensible and against the country: Delhi Minister Ashish Sood
Delhi Minister Ashish Sood, commenting on the alleged sloganeering against PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah at the JNU campus yesterday, said, "It is reprehensible that such slogans were raised in JNU after the bail applications of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam were rejected. Sharjeel Imam had talked about cutting off the 'Chicken's Neck' to separate Northeast India. Umar Khalid had raised slogans of 'India will be broken into pieces' and was also found to be involved in the 2020 riots. Sympathy is shown towards such people because there are people in this assembly who have shared a platform with Sharjeel Imam. When you encourage such people, irresponsible elements like these raise their heads in JNU, which I condemn. What happened in JNU, where Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid were, in a way, supported, is reprehensible and against the country."
We were all hurt: RJD MP Manoj Jha
Meanwhile, RJD MP Manoj Jha said, "Let me say one thing clearly, we were all hurt. One or two things are very worrying: how can someone be kept in jail for so many years without a trial, so that it is considered the ultimate test of endurance, and only then their constitutional rights are activated? Personally, I am against 'down with' slogans, and therefore such slogans have no place in a civilized democracy. But what is this selective anger? When something was said about the girls of Bihar, why did no one show any anger? These are unhealthy symptoms in our democracy."
This is Narendra Modi's India of the 21st century: Union Minister Giriraj Singh
Union Minister Giriraj Singh said, "JNU has become the office of the 'Tukde-Tukde gang' and people with anti-national mindsets like Rahul Gandhi, whether it's the RJD, the TMC, or the Left parties. They should not forget that this is India, this is Narendra Modi's India of the 21st century. Vivekananda had said that saffron will prevail. I want to tell the 'Tukde-Tukde gang' that those who support people like Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, who harbored pro-Pakistan sentiments and talked about separating the Chicken's Neck, are traitors."
