The Maharashtra government has approached the Supreme Court in the case of the 2006 horrific train blasts in Mumbai. The government has challenged the decision of the Bombay High Court in the Supreme Court, in which 12 accused were acquitted.
Maharashtra's Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has challenged the High Court's decision and appealed to the Supreme Court for justice.
The Supreme Court has fixed July 24 as the date for hearing this case. A bench headed by Chief Justice BR Gavai will hear this case.
It is worth noting that the Bombay High Court has acquitted all 12 accused in this case on July 21. The court had said that the prosecution has failed to provide solid evidence against these accused.
What was the 2006 Mumbai Train Blast Case?
On July 11, 2006, in the evening, when Mumbai's local trains were packed with passengers, RDX bombs exploded at seven places.
These blasts took place in Khar-Santacruz, Bandra-Khar, Jogeshwari, Mahim, Mira Road-Bhayander, Matunga-Mahim and Borivali. Within just 11 minutes, these blasts shook the city. Initially seven separate FIRs were registered, but later the case was handed over to ATS.
ATS had filed a chargesheet under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). In 2015, the lower court convicted 12 out of 13 people, but one person, Wahid Sheikh, was acquitted. Now this decision of the High Court has declared the remaining 12 people innocent as well.
