India's star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu once again brought glory to the country on the world stage. She won the silver medal in the women's 48kg category at the ongoing Weightlifting World Championships in Førde, Norway, on Friday. This is Mirabai's third medal at this prestigious tournament.

Mirabai Chanu has been struggling with injuries recently. Due to this, her performance in the last few tournaments was poor, but she shone at the World Weightlifting Championships. Her performance proves that despite her injuries and struggles, she remains India's biggest hope in world weightlifting. Her silver medal is considered a strong step towards preparations for the upcoming Paris Olympics in 2028.

2017 Champion and 2022 Silver Medalist

Mirabai Chanu became the World Champion in 2017 and won the silver medal in 2022. This time, she entered the 48 kg category and lifted a total of 199 kg (84 kg snatch + 115 kg clean and jerk) to reach the podium. Chanu had previously competed in the 49 kg category, but due to a strategic change, she competed in the 48 kg category.

Struggle in the snatch, a strong comeback in the clean and jerk

Chanu's performance in the snatch was not as expected. She attempted to lift 87 kg twice but failed. However, she successfully lifted 84 kg in her third attempt. She then made a strong comeback in the clean and jerk, successfully completing all three attempts. Chanu impressed everyone by lifting 109 kg, 112 kg, and 115 kg in three attempts.

A glimpse of the Tokyo Olympics

Mirabai last lifted 115 kg in the clean and jerk at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, where she won a historic silver medal for India. This time, with the same energy and confidence, she lifted the weight with ease.

Coach's Goal: Crossing 200 kg

Indian team chief coach Vijay Sharma had previously stated that the goal at these World Championships was to get Mirabai to cross the 200 kg mark again and bring her closer to the weight she lifted in the 49 kg category. Although Chanu could only reach 199 kg, her performance was encouraging.

North Korea's Ri Song Gum Becomes World Champion

The gold medal went to North Korea's Ri Song Gum. She set a new world record by lifting 213 kg (91 kg snatch + 122 kg clean and jerk). Her final two attempts (120 kg and 122 kg) were particularly historic. The bronze medal went to Thanayathon Sukcharo of Thailand, who lifted 198 kg (88 kg + 110 kg).
