Russian President Vladimir Putin has estimated the value of Greenland at approximately $200-250 million. Distancing Russia from the Greenland dispute, Putin said he was not concerned about the issue. He stated, "What happens to Greenland is none of our business."
Putin estimates Greenland's value.
Speaking virtually to the Russian National Security Council on Wednesday, Russian President Putin said, "Russia also sold Alaska to the United States. By that measure, the acquisition of Greenland could be worth around $200-250 million. Considering the price of gold, this figure could be higher and could reach up to a billion dollars. But I think the United States is capable of paying even that amount."
Putin added, "The important thing is that the US and Denmark have experience with this. Denmark also sold its Virgin Islands to the United States in 1917."
Putin said he was not concerned about the issue. He stated, "What happens to Greenland is none of our business. Denmark has always treated Greenland as a colony and has been quite harsh towards it, but that's a completely different matter, and I doubt anyone is interested in it right now. Certainly, it doesn't concern us. I think they will sort it out among themselves."
The dispute over Greenland
It is worth noting that US President Donald Trump has been talking about acquiring Greenland. Greenland is a self-governing territory of Denmark. Trump is calling for US control of Greenland, citing its importance for American security. However, Denmark and the people of Greenland themselves are not in favor of this. Trump has also offered to buy Greenland. Meanwhile, Trump's talk of acquiring Greenland has caused resentment in Europe. French President Macron has clearly stated that there will be no compromise on European sovereignty. However, Trump remains adamant about acquiring Greenland.
Putin may join the Board of Peace.
Regarding the possibility of joining the Board of Peace, Putin said, "The Foreign Ministry has been instructed to carefully study the documents we have received regarding joining the Board of Peace. We will also discuss this with Russia's strategic partners, and only then will we make a decision." Putin added that Russia has always been in favor of strengthening international stability. He also praised the US efforts to resolve the Ukrainian crisis. President Putin also thanked President Trump for the invitation to join the Board of Peace.
