Farmers are the priority of the central government. The Union Cabinet took an important decision on Wednesday and increased the minimum support price (MSP) on 14 crops of the Kharif season. The third NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had released more than Rs 3 lakh crore of its first decision PM Kisan Samman Nidhi a day earlier. It also includes crops like paddy, cotton, and pulses.
The government fixes MSP every year
The government fixes MSP every year to get farmers a fair price for their produce. New MSP rates have been released for 2024-25. After the cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the MSP of paddy has been increased by Rs 117 per quintal. Now farmers can sell their paddy at the rate of Rs 2300 per quintal. Two lakh crore rupees will be spent on the new MSP.
The decision to build two lakh new warehouses
This will be Rs 35 thousand crore more than the last crop season. Compared to 2004-14, more procurement was done on every crop during Modi's tenure. Concerned about the safety of the produce, the government has decided to build two lakh new warehouses at the panchayat level. Vaishnav said that the highest increase in MSP has been recommended for oilseeds and pulses as compared to last year. The MSP of paddy crops has been increased by Rs 117.
"Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the government has taken care of 'seed to market' keeping in mind the concerns of the farmers. In the first two terms, the government created a strong base for the economy and the welfare of farmers. On that strong base, we can take a good leap. This is continuity in policy while focusing on farmers."
A total of 23 crops are included in the scope of MSP
The new MSP of cotton will be Rs 7,121. The MSP of another variety of this will be Rs 7,521. This is Rs 501 more than before. Sesame has been fixed at Rs 632 per quintal and tur dal at Rs 550 per quintal. MSP is the fixed price which is approximately one and a half times more than the cost of the produce to the farmers. On the recommendation of the Commission for Agricultural Cost and Prices, both the Central and State Governments decide it after discussion. Currently, a total of 23 crops have been included in the scope of MSP.
